Using Number Bonds

17 May 2019

Number bonds are a key feature in Singapore Math and show how numbers are broken down and put together. In think! Mathematics, number bonds are featured across grade levels in various topics.

Number bonds are used in simple addition and subtraction in earlier grades and continue to be used in the addition and subtraction of larger numbers in later grades.

Students also use number bonds when learning algorithms involving multi-digit numbers. For example, before students encounter the formal long division algorithm, they are shown how the algorithm comes from number bonds.
